Job duties

The typical maintenance mechanic job consists of ensuring devices and mechanical equipment is functioning properly by performing preventative maintenance on engines, machine parts, belt systems and various machines. This is typically done by following diagrams, manuals, manufacturer’s instructions or engineering specifications.

Maintenance mechanics also diagnose problems and potential problems by watching mechanical devices and machines in operation, listening for issues and using precision tools in the process.

Individuals in a maintenance mechanic role also take apart devices and analyze machine parts when a problem arises. An analysis might reveal that parts need to be adjusted, replaced, removed, upgraded or modified.

A maintenance mechanic is also often responsible for designating production downtime for routine maintenance, repairs or new equipment installations.

These professionals are also responsible for maintaining inventories of equipment, parts and supplies, regularly checking stocks to find out if levels are adequate and planning on future stock needs. They may also be required to fill out requisition forms, place orders and verify receipt of replacement equipment, parts and supplies.

Maintenance mechanics typically interact with other departments or members of the public. They may be required to offer consultation on mechanical maintenance matters. They also are often required to prepare reports by gathering, studying and outlining data and trends.

Finally, maintenance mechanics are expected to keep their technical knowledge up-to-date by going to educational workshops and reviewing the latest publications.

Job demands

While performing the day-to-day duties of a maintenance mechanic, workers may be subjected to toxic gases, airborne debris, moving machine parts and violent vibrations. From time to time, maintenance mechanics are also subjected to extreme conditions, such as loud noises, blazing heat and freezing cold.

Maintenance workers must have good communication skills and be able to hold conversations in harsh conditions. They must also be in decent physical shape as the job typically calls for lifting, twisting, crouching, bending, stooping, crawling and climbing for extended periods of time.

Job requirements

Maintenance workers must have a high school, or equivalent, diploma. They should also have formal technical training working with mechanical devices. Most companies will prefer candidates to have at least a couple of years of related experience.
